Mysterious, this painting. It calls to mind Ovid’s Metamorphoses, stories about people who are transformed into something or someone else. Here that process takes place in reverse. The two figures seem to rise up out of a mountain landscape; the lower half of the figure on the right in particular seems barely human. The large head is actually the negative space formed by the two figures, a void that is given concrete form by the summary addition of a mouth, eyes and an ear.
