Painting has been predominantly figurative since the 1980s, but abstract art is certainly not dead. It has simply become less utopian, less dogmatic and more whimsical. The American abstract painter Chris Martin unhesitatingly borrows what he wants from earlier abstract art and joyfully mixes it with elements from pop culture and kitsch, as in this glittery painting with leopard-skin fabric.
