Schwan (3)

Ask anything

  • Ellen Smits asked

Why this title? 'The Schwan 3'?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hi Ellen, the composition seems abstract, but look at it closely - or rather from a distance. When you use your imagination, you can see that Richter a) had the image of a swan mirroring in the water as a source of inspiration or b) recognised the motif of a swan after handling and manipulation the paint over the surface. Personally I think the latter, but it would be good to read a little more about Richter's way of working. Kind regards, Els
