Like many artists of the period Mair von Landschut used paper with a coloured preparation. This enabled the artist to heighten the drawing with white body colour, thus creating effects of light and shade that enhance the sense of depth. Mair von Landschut was the first artist to print copper engravings on tinted paper and is thus a direct precursor of Albrecht Altdorfer.
