More information

Five rays jetting from the crucifix on the altar strike the enraptured St Catherine of Siena, allowing her to share in Christ’s pain on the Cross. St Francis was marked for life after a similar experience, but St Catherine did not bear the lasting scars of Christ’s wounds. Beccafumi therefore focused mainly on the ecstasy of this Dominican nun, who was canonised in 1461.
