Imi Knoebel's work is very diverse. Not only does this former pupil of Beuys engage in sculpture, painting and photography, but his oeuvre also evinces an alternation between constructive and expressive ideas. in 1984-85 Knoebel made a number of objects inspired by the traditional sideboard or dresser. They are arrangements of form and colour, which invite contemplation. The 'Sideboard' in the museum's collection is the most introverted of the series. It is almost monochrome, in tones of reddishbrown and grey, and built up of rigid rectangular forms and makes the ragged corner elements all the more conspicuous. The large painted field draws attention to itself. Knoebel himself actually sees the work more as a painting than a sculpture.
