Although Jan Schoonhoven is best known for his white geometric reliefs, his early work was inspired by other tendencies. His paintings, drawings and reliefs from the 1950s show the influence of matter painting (such as Antoni Tàpies, also shown here) and Abstract Expressionism. From 1957 he made these irregular reliefs from papier-mâché. At that time, Paris was still the epicentre of the art world, hence the French title.
