The resolute painting style and subdued colours in this canvas remind us of the work of Pierre Soulages, but it is still recognisably figurative, and the shadows create a suggestion of depth and plasticity. With his heavy, dark figures and landscapes, Van Eyk, an unjustly forgotten Dutch artist, fits within the tradition of Belgian Expressionists such as Constant Permeke.
