Van Bohemen undoubtedly made a conscious choice for the elongated vertical format that we know from Japanese scroll paintings. The painting style also takes its inspiration from them, even if he has employed oil paint rather than the ink that Japanese masters historically used. Japanese art was extremely popular in the 1950s, both in Europe and America. Van Bohemen’s interpretation of that influence holds the middle ground between calligraphic characters and an abstracted landscape.
