Like de Staël in his still life in this gallery, Poliakoff often painted with a palette knife. The result, however, is very different, also because Poliakoff worked on panel rather than canvas. The paint is spread smoothly, with underlying colours showing through here and there. The composition is a jigsaw puzzle of coloured blocks that align with each other but are not purely geometric.
