More information

This storm of 1603 is the masterpiece of Frederik van Valckenborch, who like many Protestant artists left Antwerp to escape religious persecution. He moved to Frankfurt, visited Italy, and ended his days as a feted artist in Nuremberg. Every attempt to recognise a specific story in this scene has failed, and it is very likely that the artist was only interested in the sublime effect.
