More information

During the short period in which the Cobra group existed, from 1948 to 1951, Appel painted simplified human and animal figures in solid blocks of colour. Later his painting style became looser with thick layers of paint and lots of black. In this painting, man has become a monstrous creature with an enormous striped, mask-like head who seems to be making his way through a city with sketchily rendered towers and houses.
