Wagemaker was the most important Dutch exponent of Matter painting in the 1950s and 1960s. Like his better-known Spanish colleague Antoni Tàpies, he made reliefs that evoke associations with walls, rock faces or aerial views of mountains or deserts, with traces of human activity or the forces of nature. The title of this work suggests that these traces are letters, albeit from an unknown language.
