Of the Dutch artists working in an abstract style in the 1950s, Nanninga was closest to his French colleagues. His canvases are delicately painted with a subtle use of colour and sensitive lines. They are suggestive and atmospheric, such as this impression of a Middle Eastern city by night with a large sickle moon hanging above the houses.
