Portrait of a Camaldulense friar

Ask anything

  • Robert Bunkin asked

I will be visiting Rotterdam in June 2020. I am a scholar of Giovanni Battista Moroni's work, and consider Moroni's portrait in Rotterdam to be among his masterpieces, but I see that it is in storage. How can I make an appointment to see this work? It is one of my reasons for visiting Rotterdam.

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hi Robert, one of our registrars will contact you about whether it is possible to see the artwork in our depot as soon as possible via e-mail. Kind regards, Sarie.

More information

This portrait of a Camaldolese monk is characterised by liveliness and the directness of observation. The young monk looks over his left shoulder with a smile on his lips. This spontaneous facial expression is something Moroni invented himself; the motive returns in various works from his hand. The portrait is very balanced in composition. The muted colours of the face, the clothes and the background are carefully attuned to each other.
