The Scottish painter Alan Davie was also a jazz musician, adept at playing several instruments. He loved to improvise and that also seems apparent in his paintings. He worked quickly, often on canvases laid on the floor, like the American artist Jackson Pollock. He dotted his works with forms and signs that evoke hieroglyphs or secret languages; symbols perhaps, but never clearly intelligible.
