More information

This still life with books and a candle has a moralistic message. It is an exhortation not to waste their valuable time, for 'studium' can win over 'vanitas'. The German painter Stosskopf skilfully suggests a captured moment with the smouldering candle and the pages springing up. He has immortalised a fleeting moment, transience itself.
