More information

Ter Brugghen’s art is often very gloomy compared to that of his contemporaries. Many of his young people are ugly prostitutes or soldiers, his saints penitent sinners. No merry eroticism for him, or hope of salvation - an old man hitting himself with a stone instead. He was almost forgotten until he was rediscovered around 1950 as the best Dutch follower of the Italian Caravaggio.
