The muscular man with his club was almost literally copied from the Farnese Hercules, one of the most famous ancient statues. The woman on the ground, whom Rubens added, symbolizes Envy conquered by the virtuous Hercules. The function of this sketch is unclear. It has been suggested that Rubens made the panel to show how a painter could bring a statue to life with paint.
