    Who is Mona?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hi Stephen, Thank for your question. Unfortunately we do not know more about the woman that is portrayed here by Martine Stig. The photo is part of a series entitled 'Sisters' and this serties consists of six photo's on which nine young women in islamic clothing are shown. The essence of this clothing is that individual beauty and characteristics (body, hair, face, sometimes even the eyes) are covered and hidden. In most Western lands there has been a lot of discussion about this. I think that the artist wanted us to look at it differently, and not only discover the bonding quality (they become sisters) but also recognize the new and strange beauty of the women. Kind regards, Els
