If the Portrait of a Lady (Susanna Herzogin von Pfalz), D I 162 (PK)
is missing since World War II, how come the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum has a high resolution digital image of the portrait study available?

Dear Ian Velthuis,

I understand this might come across very paradoxical, but I believe the high resolution image we have is a copy of a book in which it was printed. We actually unfortunately still do not know where the actual print is.

This drawing is part of a group of 508 drawings from the Koenigs Collection, which was sold in the fall of 1940 by D.G. van Beuningen to Dr. Hans Posse, Hitler's Sonderbeauftragter Linz. This transaction was in violation of Dutch laws and international agreements. See the publication by Albert J.
