Eileen Agar grew up in a wealthy British family, with nannies, ballroom dancing and lots of travel. Agar began to break away from this sheltered upbringing as a student at the London’s Slade School of Art in 1921. In 1928 she settled temporarily in Paris Montparnasse where she met the Surrealist writers André Breton and Paul Éluard. Agar was one of the few women who took part in the 1936 ‘London International Surrealist Exhibition’ and was a central figure in the British Surrealist group.
