This photograph by David Claerbout is part of the 'Venice Lightboxes' series, which is made up of four photos. These almost black photos are shown on light-boxes in a completely darkened room. The eyes of the spectator must first grow accustomed to the sparse light before the all too familiar tourist images are revealed. Claerbout concentrates on the moment at which something becomes an image; he makes the viewer aware of the 'act' of seeing. The photographs were made using a special camera for architecture and were shot at dawn or dusk.
