In this drawing Hans Baldung Grien, Albrecht Dürer’s most gifted pupil, demonstrates his artistic ability. He drew in dark ink on a coloured background and applied the highlights with white bodycolour. Baldung had a penchant for depicting the naked human body, often with erotic or, as here, gruesome undertones. How St Sebastian still manages to stay on his feet despite wounds in crucial places can be described as a miracle.
