Peter Saul is known for spiteful and morbid scenes that appeal to low culture and bad taste. But in the early 1960s he made a series of cartoon-like canvases of open fridges, each entitled Icebox. The paintings are innocent and humorous. In this particular Icebox pistols are fired at a yellow and pink fridge full of cans with – to judge from the labels – remarkable contents. And apparently Superman has also hidden in the fridge.
