Ask anything

  • Anna Sexton asked

Hello! I am a student at the University of Strasbourg writing a thesis of the provenance of works in their collections. The Strasbourg museum possesses the other side of these wings, so I would like to ask about the provenance of Heemskerck's Visitation. Could you please send me any information you know?

    Thank you!
    Anna Sexton

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hi Anna, this artwork is a part of the collection of Willem van der Vorm which the museum preservers as a long term loan since the 1990s. Therefore I can't see any other information about the provenance of this artwork in our registration system. Best, Lisa

  • Marly asked

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Groeten, Els

More information

When closed the wings of this triptych show the Visitation, the meeting of Mary and Elisabeth, both of whom are expecting a child. The middle panel is missing. In accordance with the story, Elisabeth is depicted as a richly dressed somewhat older woman. The detailed figure of Elisabeth was painted by Van Heemskerck himself, Mary was painted by an assistant or student.
