Adriaen Coorte

IJzendijke 1659/1664 - in of na 1707

Around 1695, Adriaen Coorte's name appears in the books of the St Luke guild of Middelburg. The work of Coorte is characterised by small-sized, simple still lifes. He preferred to paint asparagus, gooseberries or shells against a dark background. The refined use of light and an eye for detail make Coorte's work special. It is remarkable that Coorte generally painted his still lifes on paper. He would then glue that paper to a wooden panel. This way of working was unusual in the 17th century.
