Henri Le Sidaner

Port Louis 1862 - Versailles 1939

Henri Le Sidaner was born on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean and grew up in Dunkirk. He studied briefly at the Academy of Paris and in 1882 left for Etaples in the north of France. In 1891 his work was exhibited at the Salon in Paris and he won third prize. In 1900 Le Sidaner moved first to Beauvais and then to Gerberoy. Here he started painting village views, often in a deserted state. For these works, Le Sidaner frequently painted from memory rather than from direct observation. A series of cityscapes of Venice which he painted in 1905 was very well received at the Salon.
