The Floor is Yours

The project The Floor Is Yours has now ended and has provided important insights. The project was a two-year partnership between Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (Rotterdam, the Netherlands) Mumok, MUseum MOderner Kunst Stichting Ludwig (Vienna, Austria) and MART, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto (Italy). The lessons and recommendations have now been published. They are relevant for museum professionals who want to collaborate more with community groups on their public programmes.

The Floor Is Yours is an experimental project that has engaged with local partners to explore new ways to promote inclusion in museum programming. This was done by exploring new ways of collaborating with local communities and initiatives and building long-term relationships.

For the project, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen teamed up with Cult North, Mauvier Kunst & Cultuur met Gebaren and young people from the deaf community. The project was made possible by a contribution from Creative Europe, the European support programme for the cultural and creative sectors 2021-27.

Insights

Several important insights gained from The Floor Is Yours:

  • Take the time to build connections, trust and equality within a partnership.
  • Approach collaborative projects with an open mind. Be prepared to learn about and explore new working methods and forms of public programming.
  • Allow members of the communities to help determine the museum’s set-up: not a supporting role but real participation in decision-making

The full report can now be downloaded as a concise PDF containing directly applicable insights for museum professionals who want to initiate participatory public programmes.

Cult North

Cult North is an initiative that promotes art education and develops the passion of young self-taught makers from Rotterdam by introducing them to various forms of creative expression and guiding them towards professionalisation. It responds to the makers’ needs and works with them to create a programme to promote greater accessibility to art and the cultural sector.
