Selection of architects for Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen

The selection of architects for the large-scale renovation and modernisation of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam was announced in August 2019. The three architects/teams chosen by Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and Rotterdam City Council will work further in the autumn of 2019 to elaborate their ideas for the ambitious modernisation of the museum. The City Council and the museum are delighted to enter the next phase with the architects/teams below. A single architect or team will be selected at the beginning of 2020.

The two practices’ have varied and complementary work experience. They both share a design attitude characterised by careful attention to the concept and details of each project and a relentless focus on refining design ideas to arrive at a solution that is architecturally, socially and intellectually coherent. They design with respect for the existing context and with an eye for the possibilities that this offers for the client and society at large.

The two practices form a complementary partnership that combines profound craftsmanship with mutual respect. They have significant experience in the construction of new public buildings and museums and the renovation and restoration of important monuments. KAAN Architects and Van Hoogevest Architects are also working together on Museum Paleis Het Loo in Apeldoorn. Their joint portfolio includes projects such as the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Huys Amerongen, Bezuidenhoutseweg 30 in The Hague and Hilversum Town Hall.

“I like well-detailed, unforgettable spaces, with extensive use of natural and innovative materials. And it is very important that a building must be future-proof and sustainable.’”

Francine Houben, creative director Mecanoo.

The practice has used this philosophy to design a wide range of projects, including the Library of Birmingham, the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts in Taiwan. The renovations of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library in Washington and the prestigious New York Public Library will be completed in 2020. The practice’s buildings in the Netherlands include the Netherlands Open Air Museum in Arnhem, the Delft City Hall and Railway Station and the Library of Delft University of Technology. Mecanoo is currently working on the renovations of De Nederlandsche Bank in Amsterdam and Heerlen Town Hall.

Boijmans in Transit

The museum is now closed for essential renovations. In this transitional period, the museum is making its world-class collection available elsewhere in Rotterdam and further afield. In addition to the ‘Boijmans Next Door’ projects, the museum has also created travelling exhibitions for museums all around the world. And schoolchildren in Rotterdam are being introduced to real artworks from the collection in the project ‘Boijmans in the Classroom’. Meanwhile, the construction of Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen continues apace. The world’s first publicly accessible art-storage facility will open at the beginning of 2021 and will safely house and display 151,000 artworks.
