IFFR 2024

During International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), artist and filmmaker Rosa Barba is part of IFFR's Art Directions programme. Barba presents her orchestral installations 'Drawing Probable Conclusions' and 'VOICE ENGINE and Hear, There Where the Echoes Are' at Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen.

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen invited Rosa Barba to delve into the film and video collection. Barba's research and presentation in the Depot is a layered project, consisting of several phases. The presentation, part of IFFR's Art Directions programme, was proposed in conversation with Francesco Stocchi (former curator, Boijmans) and can be seen during IFFR 2024.

Drawing Probable Conclusions

In Drawing Probable Conclusions, Barba presents the work of artists who engage with the different aspects of film. In addition to works from the museum collection by artists such as Fiona Tan, Miguel-Ángel Cárdenas, Anna, Deimantes Narkevicius and Rivane Neuenschwander, Barba has selected works that the museum should acquire, such as Strikes at Time (2011) by Raqs Media Collective, and From Left to Night LP (2019) by Wendelien van Oldenborgh.

Drawing Probable Conclusions can be seen up to and including January 28. Afterwards, the transition to the final phase begins.

VOICE ENGINE and Hear, There Where the Echoes Are

In the final phase, VOICE ENGINE and Hear, There Where the Echoes Are, Barba creates a cinematic space with artists, musicians, singers and viewers. In this space she will stage two performances: VOICE ENGINE (2021-24) and Hear, There Where the Echoes Are (2016-24).

Barba designs a promenade through the gallery, full of memories. Her work offers a sensory experience enhanced by vocal and musical performances. The viewer is no longer passive, but becomes the conductor of an almost organic being.

Aside from the performances, VOICE ENGINE and Hear, There Where the Echoes Are, is on view as installation from Thursday 1 February up to and including Sunday 3 March.
