The young Anthony van Dyck made this drawing in his teacher Rubens’s workshop after a finished painting intended for a tomb. He made notes above the fgures about the colours and the conditions in which they had been painted, by daylight or candlelight, as we can see from the one beside the figure of Christ on the right: ‘dese fguere was geschildert op eenen stercke dach’ (this fgure was painted on a bright day). The two sheep below right refer to another Bible scene in which Christ instructs Peter to feed his sheep - his followers - after his Resurrection.
