More information

This quick sketch is the first design for the large oil painting that Rubens made around 1619-1620 for Nicolaas Rockox, the mayor of Antwerp. The painting – a large panel measuring approximately four by three metres – was intended as the altarpiece for the Minderbroederskerk. Ten years later Boëtius à Bolswert made a large engraving based on the painting.
