Rembrandt portrayed himself many times in paintings so we know what he looked like throughout his life. By contrast there are few
portrait drawings by him. This is probably an initial quick sketch, set down with just a few strokes of the pen, which served as the basis for a painting, possibly the one dated 1658 in The Frick Collection (New York).
