This small sheet was once larger and contained a fourth drawing, probably of a similar subject. Rembrandt made the drawings on the
reverse of an etching, also showing a man wearing a fur cap. A collector cut the sheet down to the edge of the printed image, thus removing part of the drawing on the reverse. Several study sheets by Rembrandt have survived. He kept them in portfolios in his studio.
