In this study, a man stands on a staircase in a
listening posture; on the right, a figure can be seen schematically looking in
through a window. The drawing is related to several paintings by Nicolaes Maes
about eavesdropping, in which a young person looks at the viewer with a smile
and a finger to their mouth, while on the other side there is often a couple
making love. Maes painted these moralistic works, about marriage and deception,
mainly between 1655 and 1657.
