In this romanticized scene, the elderly Erasmus is visited by his friends Nicolaus Episcopius, Bonifacius Amerbach and Hieronymus Froben a couple of days before his death on 12 july 1536. The famous scholar is ill in bed, re-reading old letters. Taurel reproduced a history painting of 1879 by Hendrik Albert van Trigt in the Museum Boijmans collection.
