De tekening toont een hooggelegen weg (waarschijnlijk gelegen op een dijk) met zicht over graslanden, bomen, een vaart, huizen en een kerkje. Het grote huis met de verdieping links aan de weg is, gelet op het uithangbord, een herberg. Het rechter deel van de voorstelling, met de blauwe wassingen, is los getekend. De combinatie van bruine en blauwe wassingen herinnert aan tekeningen van Jan Brueghel de Oude en diens school en verklaart de latere toevoeging van zijn familienaam.1
