Drost drew a view of Arnhem in the background and signed the
drawing ‘Ant. Drost fec[i]t’ lower centre. An annotation on the verso
translates as ‘A Linnet by Anthonie Drost’. The trunk must be of a
bonsai tree - or are we perhaps looking here at an extraordinary,
extinct variant of the species previously unknown to science, the
Giant Linnet (Carduelis gigantus)? In fact, it was Drost permitting
himself a little artistic licence.
