Carlo Cignani was the pre-eminent artist in Bologna in the later seventeenth century. Like Guercino and the Carracci, he ran a flourishing studio and received prestigious commissions from at home and abroad. Cignani combined two charming female figures with a study of the folds of a garment. There is a strikingly large hand clasping a vase in the centre.
