More information

In the pose of the reclining figure there is a significant resemblance to the dead Christ in the ‘Pietà dei Mendicanti’, a large painted altarpiece by Guido Reni now in the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Bologna. It may have served as a preliminary study for that work. There is a grid over the drawing. This would have been used to transfer the drawn composition on to a canvas or panel at the required scale.
