After the Second World War, Mondriaan, De Stijl, Bauhaus and the Russian constructivism were rediscovered. The philosophical and idealistic backgrounds of early abstract art were attractive, but didn’t fit just like that into post-war society. Young artists such as JCJ Vanderheyden looked for ways to give the abstract language a contemporary meaning and eloquence.
