This scene from the deposition of Christ is drawn on paper in rough, loose lines. Given the swift style it is likely that the drawing served as a study for another work, although no such related artwork has as yet been identified. The maker of the drawing is also difficult to pin down. Initially, the attribution of the sheet was in the name of the Florentine artist Andrea del Sarto (1486-1530), after which it was changed to Matteo Rosselli(1578-1650).^[1] Although Christ’s position with the head hanging forward and the knees drawn up corresponds more or less with a print by Parmigianino (1503-1540),^[2] Gert Jan van der Sman suggested an artist in the circle of Cavaliere d’Arpino (1568-1640) or Cherubino Alberti (1553-1615) in Rome.^[3] There are somewhat similar red chalk studies with strong outlines and rough hatching in New York and London.^[4] Our drawing however is of a poorer quality due to the somewhat clumsy way in which the faces of the figures and Christ’s hand are depicted. In the absence of a convincing attribution, we classify the sheet for the time being as made in an Italian workshop around 1600.
