More information

This drawing is a preparatory study for a painting intended for the main altar in the Chapel of the Brotherhood of the Holy Cross in the Church of St Michael Ghent. The commission was initially offered to Rubens, but seems eventually to have been given to Van Dyck. A preparatory sketch in oils also exists. Five years later Schelte à Bolswert made a large print based on the painting.
