The scene on this print is connected with an actual event . In 1863 a passenger from a first-class compartment on a train was shot dead, an incident which led Daumier to make a number of paintings and drawings and a series of lithographs. This print is No. 6 in the series 'En chemin de fer', which was published in the daily newspaper 'Le Charivari'. The image of two heavily armed men very much on their guard against one another accentuates the anxiety of contemporary travellers, while the caption, 'The only way to make a pleasure trip in safety', relativizes it again to certain extent by its gross exaggeration. Between 1832 and 1872 Daumier produced two illustrations a week for Paris newspapers, which reveal his great interest in political and social changers. But these cartoons, which were often bitter, were not always received with open arms and they even got him put into prison. This difficult period did, however, make him world famous.
