The French Realist painter François Bonvin made numerous drawings in black chalk of this kind, depicting women in domestic settings engaged in sewing, knitting, cooking, doing laundry, or as we see here, changing the candle in a lamp. Bonvin's drawings were often signed and dated, and intended as finished works for sale in their own right. His subjects were inspired by the works of seventeenth century Dutch painters, and the French still life painter Jean-Siméon Chardin.
