Deze tekening laat een grote, schuin gegroeide boom op een heuvel zien, met nog twee bomen in de achtergrond. De boom heeft een stevige kruin en halverwege de stam enkele takken met veel blad, waarvan de rechter lijkt te buigen in de wind. Door de strakke contourlijnen en de donkere wassingen op de stam en in het bladerloof, steekt de boom helder af tegen de achtergrond waar enkel wat kleine wolkjes zijn getekend.

De tekening is toegeschreven geweest aan Abraham Bloemaert en Roelandt Savery, zoals blijkt uit veilingcatalogi en opschriften op de keerzijde. Van Regteren Altena schreef het blad voorzichtig toe aan Jacques de Gheyn II als een vroeg werk van de kunstenaar.¹ Bovendien bracht hij de tekening in verband met een – eveneens voorzichtig door hem aan De Gheyn toegeschreven – Palmboom in een rotsachtig landschap in the Fogg Art Museum in Cambridge (Mass.), die ongeveer even groot is als het Rotterdamse blad en overeenkomt wat betreft tekenstijl, compositie en thematiek.² Van Regteren Altena suggereerde dat beide bladen mogelijk tot een reeks tekeningen van verschillende boomsoorten behoorden. Aannemelijk is dit echter niet, want een specifieke boomsoort valt op de Rotterdamse tekening niet te herkennen – het gaat om een exemplaar dat ‘uit de geest’ en niet ‘naar het leven’ getekend is.³ Bovendien wijkt wat betreft tekenstijl deze studie van een boom zo af van de boomstudies van Jacques de Gheyn (zie inv. nr. MB 1976/T 41) dat een toeschrijving aan deze kunstenaar niet houdbaar is.
