This city gate was located in the southeast, at the end of the Hogewoerd. There was an inner gate and an outer gate. At the front we see the outer gate, connected by two drawbridges to the other side of the Singel, leading to the Hoge Rijndijk. The inner gate is the monumental building on the left in the background, built in 1659 to the design of Leiden city architect Willem van der Helm. Unfortunately, the inner gate was demolished in 1876, a few years after the outer gate. This took place as part of a work-expansion project and served to make the city more accessible to traffic. In the background some houses are visible on the right and the church De Hooglandse kerk. [text: Albert Elen, 2020]
