This city gate is located in the northeast, where the Oude Rijn crosses the Singel. A drawbridge connects both banks of the canal. This gate was designed in classicist style by the Leiden city architect Willem van der Helm, just like the Morspoort, which has also been preserved. The other six city gates were all demolished in the second half of the nineteenth century to make the city more accessible to the increased traffic. [text: Albert Elen, 2020]
