This city gate is located in the west, here seen from the opposite side of the Witte Singel. It connected the Noordeinde across the Singel with the road to the village Voorschoten and the city of Den Haag (The Hague) and was therefore also called the Haagpoort. A drawbridge connected both banks. It was a double gate, with an inner and an outer gate. To the right behind the modest outer gate from 1592 lies the monumental inner gate of architect Arent van 's-Gravesande, built in 1650. The outer gate was demolished in 1862, the inner gate in 1865. Out of sight is on the left is the river Oude Rijn, with on the other side the Morspoort. [text: Albert Elen, 2020]
